Some background information for my sci-fi YA series Terminus…
Terminus begins in the 260th year of the Great Alliance. 840 on the New Guard calendar. 11,431 on the Somontran Republic calendar. 2,751 Common Era on the Earth calendar. 725 years into our own future, Earth is an unimportant speck in the greater political calculus of nations and is still mired in its own bitter civil war.
Three centuries earlier, the Shoreless Sea (this area of the galaxy) existed in a fragile peace between superpowers. The Somontran Republic was the oldest and most advanced but took a strict isolationist policy. They did not interact with the Younger Races. Centuries earlier their traditional matriarchal society had been overthrown by the New Guard Revolution who swapped the gender roles. Men were in power and women were subservient. But a growing secret society, the Old Guard, plotted to restore matriarchal rule.
To the east were the warring states of the Sovereignty and the Regime. The Regime created the Sovs to be their genetically engineered perfect soldiers. The Sovs eventually overthrew their masters and threatened them with conquest in turn. To the west was the vast but decaying Commonwealth.
Things had been quiet for The Hundred Years Peace… and then the Ronains arrived. Thousands of years more advanced than even the Somontrans, they sought to destroy all. The Regime became their first victims. A terrible war engulfed the entirety of the Shoreless Sea. Tragedy twisted the Somontran Republic into an Empire seeking to conquer and “civilize” the Younger Races. When the dust settled, the Great Alliance emerged out of the ashes of the Somontran Republic, the Sovereignty, and half of the Commonwealth. The war also led to the creation of the Royals, Somontrans with superhuman abilities like speed, strength, flight, and telepathy. They began with fifty and over the generations their numbers grew, though their individual power slowly diluted. Today, over half of the GA is Royal but most are only low level with rudimentary abilities.
Katherine Cayale, who came to be known as Savior, led the Resistance to overthrow the Empire and was the founding Majestrix of the Great Alliance. She sacrificed herself in the war to destroy the leader of the Empire, the Prophet Kasriel, an alien possessing powers even greater than the strongest Royal. Her physical body perished, but legends persist that one day she will miraculously return to her people in their hour of greatest need…
